Yesterday I had the absolute joy of creating an 18-foot charcuterie masterpiece for the @kqed Fresh Glass x @blackvines_ celebration, beautifully produced by @beammeuptayleur. ✨ From an incredible lineup of Black winemakers, to a powerhouse panel with @mcbridesisters and @chefnel4, to bourbon and tequila tastings—this event was overflowing with flavor, culture, and community. 🍷🥂 It was truly a stunning gathering of Black excellence, and I’m so grateful to have been part of it!

One of my deepest joys in producing @soulbox_supperclub is designing the table, not just with beauty, but with meaning. For our Juneteenth gathering, the theme Salt, Soil, and Soul came to me in a dream, a whisper from the ancestors.

Since teaching that yin yoga ( @zahzahsyinden) class to honor them, they’ve stayed close; guiding my hands, my spirit, and this table. I saw it clearly one morning: a single rose resting in salt, soil, and coffee… dandelions for resilience, like the children who still make wishes on them. Every detail was a prayer.

We honored them through the food: crab & corn hush puppies seasoned with memory, grilled watermelon and shrimp kissed by fire, a mustard green salad grown from southern roots, and grilled lamb with collard green pesto, dishes that carry the flavor of legacy, love, and land.

The table was more than decor, it was an altar. May their whispers never leave me, may they continue to guide my steps.

Earlier this week, I was in L.A. and had the pleasure of experiencing @joyce_dtla . Everything about this place was beautiful—the ambiance, the menu, the plating, and even the staff! Sitting at the counter, watching the kitchen’s choreography, made my heart swell. Every dish that emerged had me drooling. Chatting with the chef and geeking out over food together made the meal even more exceptional. Seriously, y’all, this place is a 10/10.

When I got home yesterday, I decided to dedicate today to playing in the kitchen and letting inspiration guide me. I had already curated my Juneteenth menu, but seeing it come to life today truly made me proud. I had such a good time creating these dishes, lost in the culinary zone. Inspired by my travels to Japan, everything I’ve eaten lately, the places I’ve visited, and my recent trip to Joyce, this is my Juneteenth Supper. I hope you’ll join us at the table!

I’ve been cocooned in a chrysalis phase for a while now. The darkness wasn’t frightening, but it filled me with a profound curiosity about what lies ahead. For 11 years, being a chef was my identity. Yet, somehow, it no longer resonated with me. Don’t get me wrong—I still love cooking, but turning a passion into a profession has its drawbacks.

I stepped away from the kitchen, cooking only out of necessity or to celebrate someone special. But lately, I’ve rediscovered my culinary spark! A lot of it is due to my travels and exploring restaurants with my taste bud companion, @perrperrr. The places we’ve dined at this year have been both mind-blowing and inspiring.

I just found this photo I took on my Nikon and it made me feel proud. It’s not perfect, but it’s a good photo. And the food looks freaking delicious! this picture is inspiring me to pick my camera back up, stay tuned…

Stone fruit bread pudding. Not only did @perrperrr climb a ladder in my backyard and pick the fruit, she washed it, blanched it, peeled and chopped the fruit. I think all of that effort aided in making the best bread pudding i’ve ever made! AND it’s dairy free y’all! even the vanilla bourbon glaze! I rarely ever taste my own cooking and wanna slap an ancestor, but this made my head spin, it was seriously that good! Can I get a witness???

Shaved summer squash, ripe tomatoes , cucumber, radish, and onion. All sitting atop the most spicy and delicious salsa verde. Think of it as aguachilles but vegetarian 👩‍🍳 💋 definitely gonna keep experimenting with this recipe, it was too good not to make again.

It’s almost lunch time… and i’m already thinking about this sweet potato lentil soup with coconut cream i made last night. i topped it off with flax seed, red pepper flakes, and fried sage just for some razzle dazzle. The texture and flavors are 🤌🏾 definitely adding this into the cold season rotation!

I woke up this morning panicked that summer is almost over and it’s literally my favorite produce season, so I get sad when it ends. I had all these beautiful heirlooms from the garden, so I cut them up, charred some burrata, and tore some basil from my little window plant, and made a snackie. It’s the little things that make life more manageable ya know? What’s your go to comfort snack during the summer??

Pozole Rojo with all the fixins on this windy summer day in the Bay 💕 I went to brunch last weekend and they had pozole on the menu, i was gonna order it and my home girl said “i can probably make it better than this place.” I said, “hell, me too!” So I did, and I’m not disappointed. It’s perfectly rich, with just enough spice, pork is fork tender, and the hominy is soft with a nice bite on it. Pats self on the back!

My first preparation was salting them real good and grilling them up for this frisée and heirloom tomato salad with a champagne shallot vinaigrette and fresh mozzarella. After cooking for clients all morning, I spent the afternoon playing in the kitchen. I love when I just get to create and have fun, and just let the vibe take me away. Something magical always comes about when i don’t think, I just create. Anyway, this fire ass, sexy, beautiful chicken thigh was tossed in preserved lemon, chili garlic paste, honey, pale ale, and olive oil. So was the fennel and carrots. They played in the oven at 425 for about 30 mins. while that worker i sautéed some rainbow chard stems, leaves, and garlic. Blistered some tomatoes, and finished with lemon juice. I used all my scraps (leek, carrot, onion, fennel, garlic, and the rest of the ale) to make a broth. Served it all up with some of that yummy fonio pilaf from @yolelefoods and voila! You’re looking at my lunch, and it was damn good. Healthy, flavorful, and colorful. Just like i like it!! I almost went out and bought myself lunch, but nah, we got food at the house!!! (<~~~ a black mothers mantra)

I’ve been eating a lot of salad. But not the boring kind you’re used to. Salads that are meals, with texture, color, and flava!! We can call this one an updated salmon Nicoise if we want. It has honey roasted king salmon, boiled farm egg, potatoes (that i boiled, smashed, and baked), and capers like the original. But i added roasted rainbow carrots, watermelon radish, and shaved fennel just because I wanted to. I didn’t even need dressing, just a little lemon juice and evoo. Nourishing myself and not “dieting” has been feeling real nice lately. A lot of chefs don’t cook for themselves, but I decided they wouldn’t be my story (anymore). Not only could i not wait until dinner time, I also didnt wanna waste time pulling out my camera 📷 Yall, i was making this and drooling as I channeled this place called Insalata I used to eat at with @lizamari.o in Marin. I simmered the cous cous in veggie broth, thyme and lemon zest. Tossed the eggplant in a cilantro pesto and the grilled it. Roasted some sweet cherry tomatoes, braised some kale, whisked some tahini with lemon juice/smoked paprika/cayenne, and then chopped some roasted pistachio with mint, parsley, lemon zest and juice, with a little evoo. This meal is what #vegan dreams are made of. I’m scraping my plate as I type this because I have been in a food rut lately. Nothing taste the same, everything I love (sushi and mexican food) is no longer my favorite. I get bored sometimes, but this meal my senses all the way up. I can’t wait to create some more veggie dishes for y’all, I want to encourage everyone to infuse as many healthy options in their diet for the coming year.
